Neurofeedback FAQs

How much does it cost, and is it covered by insurance?

We offer treatment packages for brain mapping (qEEG) and neurofeedback, with psychotherapy billable through insurance. Please contact us directly for more details on pricing and plans.

Note: Neurofeedback and brain mapping are generally not covered by insurance, although some plans may offer partial reimbursement. HSA/FSA funds can be used via a plan debit or credit card. Payment is required upfront, and we provide receipts and superbills for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

Coverage varies by provider and plan, so we encourage you to check directly with your insurance company. Neurofeedback is typically billed as biofeedback.

Important: If your insurance confirms coverage, document the representative’s name, date, and time for future reference.
Insurance Codes for Reference:

Initial Consultation: 90837 (primarily for counseling)
Combined Psychotherapy & Biofeedback: 90876
Brain Mapping (qEEG): 95816
Intake Interview: 90791 (includes qEEG review and treatment planning)

We reassess progress every 15-20 sessions. Some clients reach their goals within this timeframe, while others continue training if symptoms recur. Many clients also opt for ongoing sessions to maintain optimal brain function.

Frequency of Neurofeedback: Twice-weekly sessions are recommended to reinforce brain learning and growth, and three times per week may accelerate progress. Intensive sessions are also available.

Neurofeedback can support individuals of all ages:

Children: Challenges like bedwetting, nightmares, attention issues, disruptive behaviors, and learning disorders.

Adolescents: Anxiety, depression, trauma, and learning difficulties.

Adults: Anxiety, depression, PTSD, and emotional regulation.
Older Adults: Maintenance of cognitive health.

Peak Performers: Enhances abilities in sports, business, and the arts.

Non-invasive sensors are attached to the scalp with EEG paste to monitor brain waves. The signals are processed by a computer, and clients learn to control a video game using their brain activity. Each training program is personalized.

Neurofeedback is compatible with medications, though they may have a different effect as brain activation and connectivity improve.  Consult your physician to monitor and optimize any changes. We advise working with your healthcare provider to monitor and adjust as needed.

Many clients notice changes within 1-3 sessions, such as increased calmness, alertness, or improved sleep. While some effects appear immediately, others may take up to 10 sessions to emerge. Consistency reinforces neurofeedback’s benefits over time, much like learning a skill.

Results vary per individual. Some experience significant progress in as few as 10 sessions, while others with complex needs may require 50-100 sessions. Diet, lifestyle, and metabolic health also influence outcomes.

Neurofeedback is a learning process. Once the brain has integrated the training, many clients find they no longer need regular sessions, although occasional “tune-ups” can be beneficial, much like maintaining physical fitness.

Brain Mapping FAQs

What is a brain mapping session like?

A brain mapping session involves wearing a cap with sensors that captures electrical impulses in the brain. This quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) maps brain wave patterns across different regions. The process takes about 45 minutes, and the data is converted into a visual brain map report, which is analyzed to identify any areas that may need support.

Yes, brain mapping is non-invasive, safe, and painless, emitting no radiation. The electrodes are lightweight, and patient comfort is prioritized.

A brain map provides a detailed view of brain areas that may be overactive or underactive, influencing factors like attention, memory, and processing speed. It highlights strengths and areas needing support, allowing for targeted interventions tailored to your unique brain activity patterns. This leads to more effective neurofeedback protocols and improved well-being.

  • Identifies issues with brain timing that impact cognitive function
  • Pinpoints areas affecting mood, behavior, attention, sleep, and learning
  • Guides targeted neurofeedback and other interventions
  • Offers insights into suitable medication classes, reducing trial-and-error prescribing
  • Explains why previous treatments may not have been effective, offering a clearer path forward.
